Could Excess Pressure From Ear Buds Cause Pain In Ear And Headache?
Dear Doctor.I initially had left earache and bony headache(also on left side) for about six weeks. I was given a nasal spray as I had been referred to ENT about two years ago for tingling in ear and ear pain. The spray didn t work. By then I was feeling dizzy, getting nausea and hazy vision around the corners of my eyes. I also started getting pain across my nose and a severe headache(like someone had thrown a brick at my head). I had eye test-it was fine. I also had MRI scan-that was also fine. The headache was so bad that I had to take time off work and was prescribed Co-dydramol. The acute headache lasted just over a week but now my headache is just on the surface of my scalp and around both my ears-not as bad as before. My doctor has now referred me to see neurologist. I popped into see a pharmacist and he said to take Piriton once at nightime, rub Vicks on my forehead and to drop three drops of olive oil in my ears. It s only been two days but my ears have some relief. I am also anaemic from heavy bleeding. Reading was 11. What do you think is causing the headaches and earache? To be honest I have used ear buds and I might have pressed a little too hard with them but I don t know if this is the reason. Many thanks. Mrs Johal
Dear Mrs Johal, Thanks for posting your query. Reading your complaints I feel you are suffering from vascular type of headaches. Migraine and cluster headaches are some of the types of vascular headache. You said, MRI was normal, which is a relief as it rules out many intracranial type of headaches. To be sure, your temporomandibular joint has to be examined; arthralgia of this joint can cause so many mis-diagnosed migranous headaches. Cleaning the ear with buds few times will not cause such severe ear ache. You would need pregabalins which are prescription medicines. Seeing a neurologist is a good idea. For acute headaches, ponstan forte 500mg has shown good relief. Relaxation exercises and yoga also have shown to be beneficial. Please keep us updated on your progress. Regards Dr Rao
