Could Excessive Fiber Be Causing Constipation In An Elderly Patient And How Can It Be Managed?

My Peruvian grandmother is 87 years old with Parkinson s disease. Due to injuries to her foot and hand she is bed-ridden. My wife says the patient has been constipated, on numerous occasions, for more than 15 days. The doctors here (in PerĂº) give natural fiber laxatives but doesnt help. Is it possible that too much fiber has her stool bound? What can we do to prevent this from happening and putting regular? Finances are limited so we cant buy the medications needed for her to evacuate.

Hi,

Yes, high fiber can sometimes lead to constipation. You can shift to inert laxatives like liquid paraffin to ease the movement of stools. Here you may have to start with lower dose like 5 or 10ml and gradually increase based on need.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
