Could Levetiracetam 500mg Manufactured By A Different Pharma Company Have Side Effects?
Could a different brand of my generic medicine cause new side effects? I take levetiracetam 500mg for seizures and have been tolerating it well until now. My previous rx s came from Lupin Pharma but my pharmacy just switched me to Aurobindo Pharma (and told me it was exactly the same). I suddenly have all the side effects my MD warned me about and am having an awful reaction. Could it be the change in pharma co?
Hi, Thanks for contacting HVM As you have mentioned you are taking levetiracetam for the treatment of epilepsy. It is very important that the amount of medication reaching the blood circulation remains constant throughout the medication period and if amount of drug in blood increases above what is required then side effects of drug may occur, on the other hand, if amount of drug in blood is less, drug may not be effective. I always inform my patients who are being treated for seizures to have their drug from one pharmaceutical company only and not to change the company. Drugs from different companies may have different amount of drug reaching the blood circulation ( what we call bioavailability). It seems that changing the drug company from Lupin to Aurobindo Pharma have resulted in more drug reaching the blood circulation and hence, side effects. I would advice you to again start taking Levetiracteam of Lupin company and hopefully you would tolerate it well. Hope this has helped you Regards
