Could Low BP In 80 Year Old Be A Matter Of Concern?
My mother is 80 years old and is declining right in front of me, she cannot stay awake, she cannot eat and is sometimes confused. I just took her blood pressure twice and its 108/52 and then it was 102/55, should I be concerned or call a doctor out, I havent yet as to say she is sleepy and not eating will probably not warrant a visit and they may think I am being over dramatic. I am worried though. Many thanks.
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Yes, low BP is not good at any age, particularly the elderly. 2. Avoid diastolic pressure below 60, as it could reduced perfusion causing all the above symptoms. 3. She will require venous stockings along with steroids to increase blood pressure. If she is on anti-hypertensives, dosage reduction is necessary. 4. Meet your doctor to get the tests done. Do it at the earliest to avoid risk of falls, which could be very serious at this age. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
