Could Lump On The Side Of Leg Be A Matter Of Concern?

My daughter was hit in the side of her leg (area between her shin and calf) by a pitched softball and has an orange size lump that comes down with ice but as soon as ice is off and she puts pressure on it, it swells right back up. Should we have her examined in the ER?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Orange size lump might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood).
If she is able to walk then you can wait and take routine appointment of doctor instead of emergency.
If she is not able to walk and pain and swelling is increasing, you need to go to emergency.
You may need X ray of leg to see for any bony injury.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
