Could Nausea And Weight Loss Be Due To Hypothyroidism?
My son suddenly developed depression - he s 18 and a freshmen in college. He did not feel depressed before this sudden onset of depression, nausea and weight loss and extreme fatigue and sleepiness so when he had to take tests before starting an antidepressant he got excited that maybe he could have hypothyroidism. Turns out - he just got his labs back and he does have hypothyroidism. We are waiting to hear from the doctor (don t know when that will be ) but I m wondering if nausea is part of hypothyroidism and why he would have weight loss since it usually results in weight gain. Maybe it s just because he can t eat much because he s nauseous and eating makes him feel sick. Does this sound like more than hypothyroidism going on or would this alone explain his symptoms?
Hello, I have gone carefully through your report and I am trying to give you some more suggestions regarding to your son's situation. At your son's age the most common cause of primary hypothyroidism is Hashimoto thyroidistis, which should confirmed. The symptoms that he has now seems not to be related with hypothyroidism and I would suggest to do some further examinations to exclude any other pathology. An adrenal gland insufficiency is manifested with nausea, weight loss, fatigue, depression ect. It may also be with autoimmune etiology. To rule out the adrenal insufficiency is recommended to do a cortisol level at 8 a.m. and electrolytes such as: Na, K, Cl. Hope the suggestion will help.
