Could Painful Swelling In Legs And Ankles Be Blood Clots?

Hi there, My name is Sue. My daughter just came back from L.A. to Toronto, and she has swollen legs and ankles. They do hurt her and as well she is on her menstrual cycle. I was reading one of these articles about blood clots. How worried should I be about this?? Thanks Sue

It is good to be concerned about this but the legs, ankles and feet can become swollen when sitting for long periods of time (like in a car or plane) and combined with any dehydration. without getting up and walking around enough the fluid will build up. typically, a blood clot will only occur in one leg. Be concerned about a blood clot if she has a lot of pain (to the point of tears) in her calf when she moves her ankle, bright red color to the calf, watch for a fever or sudden shortness of breath - if those occur go to the hospital immediately. Have her elevate her feet to see if the swelling improves over the next 24 hours - swelling in the legs and feet takes time to move upstream against gravity.
