Could Plates And Screws Fitted In Arm In Childhood Cause Swollen Arm, Pain In Arm And Fingers?

Hi
I broke my radius and ulna in my arm when I was 13 and had plates and screws fitted i then broke them again a year later. I'm now 30 and for the last few days have been experiencing pain in my arm and fingers. My arm looks swollen almost like I've got a lump. Should I of had my plates removed could this be a factor.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Hi Chris,
Thanks for posting your query in Health Care Magic, I understand your concern.
The swelling and the pain could be due to the plates and screws, if the plates or the screws have displaced from their fixation site it could have caused the lump and swelling in your arm.
The radiation in pain might be due to the involvement of a nearby nerve, i suggest you to get a X-ray done of the operated hand .
Consult an orthopedician who can comment on the Xray and advice you accordingly with a cast or re-surgery.
For pain you can take analgesics like ibuprofen 400 mg twice daily after food.
Hope this helps, write back to us for further assistance.
Wish you good health.
