Could Recurring Throat Issues With White Spots, Redness, And Inflammation Indicate A Bacterial Infection Rather Than Tonsillitis?

Hi, I ve been having recurring issues with my throat. I became very ill a few months back with Covid and suspected Tonsillitis, I phoned the doctors and they prescribed me penicillin for 10 days, by the 8th day my throat was back to normal. 2 weeks later I woke up (after a few beers the night before) and noticed the same problem returning. Small white spots along the closest arch in my mouth, the Palatoglossal I believe, the whole arch itself was quite red and inflamed. I got another prescription and it passed quickly. 2 weeks after that it returned again, one small white spot, similar position, however it went away after 4 days with no antibiotics. It s now returned a 4th time (Again, I had had a few beers the night before thinking I was finally free of it, and woke up the next day feeling hoarse, which then developed to the white spots) it has been 4 days now and new spots are appearing, again they are concentrated along the Palatoglossal Arch. Not on tonsils (however, the 3rd time it was located on the epiglottis). This seems to be a recurring bacterial infection, originally thought to be Tonsillitis, however the doctor did not actually get to see my throat as I had covid at the time. I don t seem to have any symptoms of Tonsillitis. An online search seems to suggest it s more likely to be Strep throat or Pharyngitis, or even Herpangia. At the moment there are 3 white spots, roughly the same shape and size of a split lentil. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

Your symptoms are indicative of pharyngitis. Gargle your throat and rinse your mouth 2-3 times daily with lukewarm salt water. Give rest to your voice and take liquid food or semi-solid homemade food to avoid throat irritation and inflammation. Take sips of water and fluid throughout the day. You can take a course of antibiotics like doxycycline, twice daily orally for 5 days. Take acetaminophen, one stat when pain and discomfort.

Take medicines after taking food. If you are suffering from the infection for a long time, it may take time to cure. However, you are advised to get clinically examined by an ENT, get required tests and investigations done to rule out or detect tonsillitis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
