Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could Seizure Medication Cause Inability To Lose Weight?
All seizure medications have not let me lose weight. After 5 Years of being on 4 meds. My weight stays the same. Recently for the first time two months ago I had a seizure where I lost my memory for five days. I Have been on Lamotrigne for two years. What do you think about totally going off my meds and taking marijuana cookies etc.
I read your question and I understand your concern.
While some antiepileptic drugs can cause weight gain that is not true for all of them. Valproic acid is the one usually associated with weight gain, while it is not common for the others including lamotrigine. There are even antiepileptics associated with weight loss like topiramate and zonisamide. Of course mentioning them is not a recommendation, because in choosing the treatment one must consider also the type of seizures and other side effects of these drugs, so you should discuss their use with your neurologist.
I hope to have been of help.
