Moms age is 87. 5 ft tall 100 lbs. Have had painful red sores on scalp for5 weeks. Tongue turned black color and started swelling 4 weeks ago. drs checking for shingles. Her tongue is so swollen she can hardly eat and any food burns her tongue. she is having trouble speaking and losing hers appetite. They have tried two different types of antibiotics that you swish in mouth and swallow but nothing is working. Her tongue is just hurting more, staying black and severlyswollen. Is thisconsistant with shingles? What can cause this?
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Use salt water gargling and candid oral mouth paint. If no improvement please consult with your ENT specialist or physician they will examine and treat you accordingly.

Could Shingles Cause Blackish Swollen Tongue?
Hello, Herpes zoster may cause severe pain and vesicular lesions on skin and heal by crust formation. It may present like swelling and pain is more. Immuno compromised patients there is a possibility of oral candidiasis may present like rash with pain. Other possibilities like viral pharyngitis or glossitis due to b12 or riboflavin deficiency. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Use salt water gargling and candid oral mouth paint.
