Could Smoking And Drinking After My Stoma Reversal Surgery Be Causing My Vertigo, Which Persists Even After Stopping?

I had a stoma reversal surgery 4 weeks ago, I started smoking 2 weeks ago and drank kind of heavily 3 out of 7 days, I started experiencing vertigo when I lay down, and I notice it also when I roll over. It goes away quickly, I haven t had a cigarette in a few day but the problem persists, it seemed to be worse while I was drinking. Is the smoking and drinking part of the problem?

Hello,

After surgery, your body needs oxygen to heal, and smoking can limit this supply, which could lead to feelings of dizziness. Less oxygen reaching the brain, results in dizziness. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, reducing circulation and blood flow. This can cause a drop in blood pressure.

Alcohol is a diuretic; it increases urine production and can lead to dehydration. After surgery, dehydration can lead to dizziness, or light-headedness. Alcohol can cause a drop in blood pressure (hypotension). This drop in blood pressure can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Post-surgery, it's important to ensure proper hydration and balanced nutrition to support healing.

Both smoking and drinking can interfere with this balance, worsening dizziness. Get a follow up clinical examination done by your surgeon to rule out any underlying medical condition that is causing you symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
