Could Swollen Ankles And Hands With Retained Fluid In Body Be The Side Effect Of Butran Patch?

I have started the Butran patch about 6 weeks ago. Just recently my ankles are swollen ( Inner ankles more) Now, my hands are swollen, and I feel like my whole body is retaining water. This has been about a week now. Is this a side effect of the patch ?

Hi,

Butran patch (Buprenorphine) is an opioid pain relieving medication prescribed for the treatment of severe pain. Its most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, itching and redness at the site of application of the patch, dry mouth, and constipation. It is unlikely to cause swollen ankles and hands or retention of body fluids.

It may be due to heart problems, kidney or liver disease, thyroid disease or anemia. You are advised to consult a physician for proper clinical examination and certain lab tests such as CBC, ESR, kidney function tests, liver function tests, urine examination, thyroid function tests to rule out any possible underlying cause.Hope the advice given above would be useful in detecting the actual cause and its appropriate treatment. A feedback is appreciated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
