Could The Mildly Increased Activity In My Ribs, Thoracic Spine, And Lumbar Spine Be Related To Old Fractures Or Degenerative Arthritis?

There are multiple foci of mildly increased activity and heterogeneous activity bilaterally in the ribs which are nonspecific. These findings could be the sequela of multiple old rib fractures. There also is mild increased activity in the mid to lower thoracic spine. There is focal moderate increased activity at the L4-5 and L5 levels of the lumbar spine. No abnormal activity seen in the skull, pelvis or hips. There is mild bilateral suspected degenerative arthritic activity in both ankles and knees.

Hello,

Focal moderate increased activity at the L4-5 and L5 is indicative of disc disease, that commonly occurs due to aging. Small tears usually develop due to pressure on the outer layer of a disc. When the water content in these discs starts to decrease, they are no longer as spongy and flexible hence pain and pressure is felt on the outer layer of the disc.

Get connected with a physical therapist. Massage therapy is helpful along with heat therapy / ice therapy and rest. Regular exercise is helpful. You are advised to take a well-balanced diet and maintain healthy weight. You should not lift or carry excess weight. For relief from pain & inflammation you can take pain relieving medications.

Do regular exercises, it will help to relieve stiffness and strengthen the muscles around them. Wearing a comfortable pair of shoes are helpful. It helps to support and stabilize your joints. Visit healthcare provider for regular checkups and as soon as you notice any changes in your joints. You will be treated accordingly and if needed surgery may be recommended by your treating doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
