Could The Pain In Throat Be Due To Tonsillitis?

Hi, I had a bacterial throat infection for which I received antibiotics 11 days ago. However 7 days ago, I went back to the doctors and was told I now have a viral infection of accute tonsilitis and there was nothing they could give me for it. Now I just have pain in the right side of my throat when I swallow and at the base of my tongue on the right side and in my right eat. Its so painful that I struggle to sleep. All the white on my tonsils has gone, could it still be tonsilitis?

Hi,

Noted your history of taking antibiotics 11 days ago for bacterial throat infection, now was told about viral infection for which there is no specific treatment as told by your Doctor, pain on right side of throat on swallowing at the base of tongue, pain in right ear, white on tonsils gone.
As per the history you have provided this seems to be due to an inflammatory lesion on right side of your throat.
The pain in right ear is usually a referred pain from lesion in right side of throat.
The most probable cause then may be aphthoid ulcer or a focus of infection.
This can be confirmed by the following says"
Consult an ENT Surgeon for endoscopy to know the exact cause.
Relevant tests of throat swab, blood and urine.
This will give the best possible diagnosis and allowing the most proper treatment.
Till then take an anti-inflammatory with painkiller properties like Ibuprofen if it suits you.
Povidone iodine gargles.
Plenty of oral fluids to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.
Continue further management as would be advised by your Doctors.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
