Diabetes, On Insulin, Been On Alcohol, Tired And Blacking Out. Suggest Solution?
i have a son in law who has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes . He is on insulin injections 4 times a day. He drinks very heavy spirits eg rum, vodka and udls. He can t be told to stop drinking and he is in denial. He is always so tired and blacking out that my daughter is scared he may lose his job over it. I have told him he has to keep monitoring his blood before and after meals as well as take his medication on time. My grandmother lost half a leg for diabetes and i saw how her life changed. How do i know what is the normal reading for his blood and where do i get information for his diet . He has not been given any diet or information and his next specialist appointment is in July. I feel the medical team has let him down in the emergency department regarding his condition.
Hi,
The normal levels for blood sugar for diabetic patient is fasting less than 126 mg/dl, and random less than 200 mg/dl.
He should avoid drinking as much as he can thats why it is toxic to the liver.
Avoid sweets and take regular good exercise to control the blood sugar levels.
Have eye examination yearly for Diabetic changes in the eye called as Diabetic Retinopathy.
Have Renal Function Tests yearly to see the toxic effects of Diabetes on the kidneys.
He can use all kind of fruits and vegetables just avoid sweets.
I hope I am sucessful in solving your query If you have further you can ask me.
Take care

Your son in law should keep his sugars between 100 to 180 mg/dl. He needs a proper Psychiatrist's help for getting rid of alcoholism. This is not a temporary problem and everybody in the family needs to understand that he will need a support to get rid of it. Then only one can take care of his/ her sugars.
Somebody should accompany him to the emergency room so that the doctors over there do not let him down as they are bound by the law to help him. Please make sure he goes to a psychiatrist and keeps proper follow up for professional help till he comes out of alcoholism.
Due to heavy alcoholism he might have a chance of pancreatitis and secondary diabetes and not type 1 diabetes. Please discuss this matter with his Endocrinologist. Take care.
