Dizziness, Problems With Hearing And Seeing, Forgetfulness. Is This A Sign Of An Illness?

My mother is a 79-year-old female who, until this month, has been extremely active for her age. She gardens and cans and keeps house for my father. Recently she started having a roaring in her ears, dizziness, temporary trouble seeing and hearing, and mild forgetfulness. Then tonight she totally forgot that her brother had died two years ago and had to undergo all the emotional grief all over again. It finally came back to her that he had passed away, but this was very upsetting for the whole family.

Hi,

Dementia could be a possible cause of your mother's forgetfulness in view of her age. But the relatively fast progression of symptoms and the concomitant difficulty in seeing and hearing suggest that some other cause like a space occupying lesion in the brain, may also be possible. In my opinion, your mother should see a doctor so that a neurological examination can be carried out. She will also require brain imaging study, preferably magnetic resonance imaging. Please do not neglect this and consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Best wishes.
