I was told that i have an Abscess under my left armpit, but that it was too deep to do a simply outpatient incision. I was told that i needed to schedule an appointment with a surgeon to see if i need to have surgery for this matter. I just wanted to know what i would have to deal with after the surgery? I m talking along the lines of recovery and aftercare. The surgery is scheduled for monday but i leave for school on wednesday and that s something i can t postpone.
Surgical drainage is needed when there is significant pus collection that is not clearing with antibiotics and analgesics. Usually a minor procedure done under local anesthesia as a day care procedure is all that is needed, but may need admission if too deep or large. Post-operatively, we need to continue antibiotics, regular wound cleaning and dressing- usually wound heals well in 5-7 days. Number of days in hospital and time needed for recovery depends on depth and collection.
