Do I Need A Surgery To Fix An Umbilical Hernia?

I was told I have a umbilical hernia. I am 54 years old. I’ve always had issues using the bathroom. Now the belly button protrudes and could fit in my hand. I have pain around it. It gets worse when when I haven’t used bathroom regularly. Belly button sticks out even more and gets really hard and bad pain. Once bowel movement happens. Doesn’t go back to normal but does cause belly to go down. I had 4 children. Do I need surgery to fix it. How do I find a doctor that takes Medicaid.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Indication for umbilical hernia surgery is all adult umbilical hernias should be repaired, owing to the high risk of complications.Indications for operative repair include pain, incarceration, strangulation, defect larger than 1 cm, skin ulceration, and/or hernia rupture. I think you need to repair because if it is hand full size causing symptoms means please consult your surgeon he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
