Do Lasix And Spironolactone Contribute To Excessive Sodium Loss?
My mom s sodium is very low 122, platelets low 66, bilirubin high 6, RBC s low 2.82. The diagnosis a year ago was idiopathic cirrhosis. In the past 3 days we have eliminated 95% of her edema with BCAA and Whey protein. My feeling is that she needs to getting off of the lasix and spironolactone now because they could possibly be contributing to excess sodium loss. Your thoughts?

HI Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic.
Yes both Lasix and Spironolactone decreases blood sodium because that is the mechanism by which they reduce water in the body.
But just because her Sodium is low doesn't warrant stopping lasix or Spironolactone . What is to be considered is whether that low Sodium is causing any problem in her consciousness . If she is becoming drowsy or sleepy then you can consider reducing the dose of Lasix.
But mind you once Lasix is reduced the chances of Edema increasing will be high.
Hope you find this information useful. Any clarifications or Queries feel free to ask
