Do Antibiotics Cause Coating On The Tongue?

I just finished take 2 bottle of antibiotics when I had 8 teeth removed. Also, one bone graft that was not healing since I have a low white blood count 2.3......could the antibiotics have caused my tongue to be coated and my mouth to feel very rough, like sandpaper?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Yes,antibiotics can cause coating over the tongue especially if taken for long duration..

Due to intake of antibiotics there can be fungal overgrowth in mouth specifically on tongue and it can lead to white coating over the tongue and it can also lead to rough feeling and irritation in mouth..

As the fungus are opportunistic organisms, so as there is reduced bacterial resistance inside mouth with antibiotic intake , the fungus start overgrowing..

So my suggestion is to first of all consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated.
You can be advised Nystatin mouthwash and Clotrimazole lozenges..
Oral antifungal medications like Fluconazole can also be advised..
Also eat plenty of probiotics like Yogurt and garlic..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
