Do Medications For ADHD Cause Any Damage To Fetus?
I m on 60mg vyvanse for ADD/ADHD and bi-polar disorder. My dr and I found it keeps me stable and focused. I no longer have frequent irratic or irrational episodes. Im 21 and am a nanny 6 days a week and am in school too. And I plan to stay in school while I m pregnant and after baby is born. I found out I was pregnant a few days ago. I estimate im about 5 weeks. I ve started on a prenatal since the day I found out, and have upped my water intake and made sure everything I eat is nutritious. I m nervous about not taking it, for my mental health and for school, trying to get into nursing school I have no room for my grades to slip. With all that said, I read that some women have continued to take their medication and their baby was fine. and the studies of damage to fetus done on rats the rats were given 20-100x the average dose given to a human. My question is will my medication cause damage to my baby? I m terrified of miscarriage, this baby is much wanted. Will it cause miscarriage?
I can understand your concern. Medical science has not reached a concrete decision regarding the safety of the drug if taken during pregnancy. It can or cannot be harmful to the baby. However, it has caused premature birth, low birth weight and withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies.
In addition, if you continue it after giving birth, it may pass into break milk and can harm the baby.
Hence, I would advise you to visit your prescribing doctor and ask him to switch to another medicine that is safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding or advise you regarding future consequences.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care of you and the baby!
