Do Nasal Polyps Cause Pulsatile Tinnitus?

Hi, I am having a problem with my ears since late sept of this year. I have tinnitus that is in sync with my pulse. I have consulted 2 ents, both with differing opinions how to treat. The first ent looked in the back of my nose with a scope and said I have nasal polyps. He has ordered an ct scan of sinuses. He says by fixing the problem with the polyps, he can fix the pulsatile tinnitus. He did not want to order an MRI. He also did allergy testing. I felt that the tinnitus was a vascular problem, so consulted another ent who ordered a mri/mra. He called the tinnitus a venous hum. He stated that pulsatile tinnitus would not be caused by nasal polyps and if they were not bothering me to leave them alone. I am confused but my gut reaction is telling me to have the mri/mra. Please help. This tinnitis is mostly in 1 ear. My hearing test came back ok.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Don't worry pulsatile tinnitus may be due to hypertension, raised intracranial pressure or aneurysms of carotid arteries or hemangioma of ear venous plexus etc.

Anemia, beri beri, pregnancy may also cause pulsatile tinnitus.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Probably polyps may not be cause of pulsatile tinnitus.

Use masking device, check your blood pressure, avoid alcohol avoid smoking.

Please consult your ENT specialist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
