Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am allergic to sulfa drugs, which nauseate me to the point of vomiting.Tetramethylthiuram disulfide, present in rubber products, may show cross-sensitivity to disulfiram (the active ingredient contained in Antabuse). Are sulfides and disulfides that same thing?YYYY@YYYY is my email and name. Thank you for the information
Sulfonamides ( like antibiotics, water pills, anti diabetic drugs, some pain killers) are known to cause allergic reactions because of the sulfur content in their chemical structures. On the other hand even though Disulfiram (Antabuse) which is used as "aversion therapy" in Alcohol de-addiction has a sulfur in its structure is different from Sulfonmides and hence not known to cause such allergic reaction.
Sulfonamides and Disufiram are two differently related compounds. Further, there is no cross allergenicity between Disulfiram and Sulfonmides.
Hope this answers your query.
