Do Thyroid Issues Cause Excessive Weight-loss?

Just doing a little research on thyroid issues for my brother. He has had a CT scan and has been instructed to follow up with the VA hospital. that visit is not until Oct 2. He is concerned because in the last 2 years he has lost 35 pounds. I m just trying to get some information to pass on to him -- NOT to self-diagnose but to educate him as best as I can (a layperson) about the thyroid.

Hello,

Increased thyroid hormone levels (hyperthyroidism) can cause weight loss. However, there are several underlying disorders that can contribute to weight loss and evaluation by a primary care provider is necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regard,

Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
