I am 57. Overweight (although same weight for years), and my thyroid tested at 0.55 recently. I am recovering from a bad upper respiratory virus, bronchitis and asthma. After using prednisone in June, I gained another unwanted 12 pounds, 6 of which I ve lost. I have low energy. Could my thyroid be the problem?
Thyroid disorders will definitely cause weight gain, but very mild. On an average it causes 2 to 3 kg weight gain which almost reverts to the original level. Most important cause of weight gain us excess diet and inactivity. So enroll in an exercise programme and take a diet of 20 kcal per kg to promote weight loss. If you take steroids for a long while, think about adrenal insufficiency. 8 am cortisol estimation will help.
