Does Acyclovir Cause False Positive Result For Vaginal Herpes?
Two years ago I developed a sore on my labia. My Dr. told me that she felt it was vaginal herpes. She did not culture it or do a blood test but put me on acyclovir 800 mg daily for 2 wks.? I have taken 400 mg. daily ever since. I asked a new Dr. to do a PCR test that came back not detected, not determined. My new Dr. told me to continue taking the acyclovir until the results were back. Now I am wondering if the reason that I got that result is because I was still on the acyclovir. Should I have discontinued the acyclovir first ? I was told today to discontinue the acyclovir and could just stop taking it completely and not wean off of it. I feel I have more concerns now then I did before but do not want to take a medication if I don t need it. I am now 68 years old. Thank you
Hello, Welcome and thanks for your query. The PCR would be negative when you are on Acyclovir. Since you have no symptoms you can discontinue the medicines if you are not sexually active. You may not have any further lesions in which case you do not need any more treatment. If it returns, then you should continue to take the Acyclovir.
Do get back to me if you have further queries.
