Does Adderall Or Synthroid Cause Hair Loss?

I have border line kidney disease, SAIDH, begin pituatary tumor,Graves disease that is under control with synthroid. I am now taking 12.5 ml per day of adderall. I was on too much synthroid and it now has just been lowered. I am experiencing quite a bit of hair loss. I have noticed that the hair on my legs and underarms is growing more slowly. However, the hair loss on my head is around 250 hairs a day. Do you think my hair loss is because of adderall or the too high of doze of synthroid, If my hair loss is caused by adderall will it grow back. Should I stop taking adderall because of my kidneys? Sorry for poor spelling and I know you are just going to give me an educated guess.

Hello,

Synthroid is used for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism and the treatment with Synthroid in this condition is required only after iodine therapy or total thyroidectomy.

To answer your question: Most people lose an average of 50 to 100 hairs from their scalp per day.

So, it is true, you are losing hair.

Both your medication, Adderal and Synthroid can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Prolonged use of Adderal can cause thinning hair and hair loss, like in your case. In my opinion, this is the cause of your hair loss.

At the other side, Synthroid can cause hair loss, especially when you start this therapy but this symptom disappears gradually for a couple of weeks.

If your hair loss is caused by Adderall it will grow back, but it is necessary to decrease the doses or to change this treatment with another medication for SAIDH. You should talk with your treating doctor about this problem.

You should not take your medication because of your borderline kidney disease.

In these cases, it is recommended to monitor regularly the kidney parameters.

It will be necessary to decrease the doses of your medication in the future accordingly to the kidney test results.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
