Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Aleve PM Interact With Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim?
The Doctor prescribed my son this medicine for an abscess or infection on his face. GENERIC NAME(S): SULFAMETHOXAZOLE/TRIMETHOPRIM He wanted to know if he would be able to take Alleve for the pain. Or which pain reliever is he allowed to take while taking this particular medicine? Aleve, Advil, Tylenol, Excedrin or Aspirin. I appreciate the assistance.
There is no documented evidence of any harmful interaction between Aleve PM drug with Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim drug, hence they can be taken together.
However, Sulfamethoxazole will increase the level or effect of Advil thereby causing side effects such as stomach irritation, heartburn, stomach ulcer or bleeding.
Due to high plasma protein binding capacity of both drugs, Aspirin may displace Sulfamethoxazole when taken together and this may to leading to enhanced effects of the displaced drug like Aspirin can increase the risk of stomach irritation, heartburn, stomach ulcer or bleeding.
In view of the above Advil, Exedrin (Aspirin/paracetamol/caffeine) or Aspirin should not be taken along with Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
