Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does DPP-4 Have The Same Effect On All Age Groups?
Adding another medication such as Dpp 4i a to someone who is 50 years old and already taking Metformin would it be different than giving to a patient that is 30 years old versus a 80 year old and also would it be different if the patient had a fever?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There are no data that I know or could find to clarify this matter. There doesn't seem to be any significant association between the age of the patient and dpp4 efficacy. Other factors like insulin resistance, concomitant use of other drugs for diabetes, pre-treatment glucosylated hemoglobin, etc seem to be more important. The same applies for fever although we do expect patients with fever to have higher glucose levels until they get well again. In other words we expect the dpp4 to have a blunted action when the patient is feverish but not more when compared with the other drugs for diabetes.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
