Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking dexilant for about 2 years now on a daily basis. I have concerns after seeing a segment on CBS news about PPI s . They listed risks such as kidney disease, fractures and dementia. I am 63 years old and have been treated for GERD for about the past 15 years. Any advice?
Dexilant is a brand name of Dexlansoprzole.
It is considered as a safe drug but prolonged use can impair calcium metabolism of your body and can cause osteoporosis( thinning of bones) and other side effects you have mentioned.
But those will happen only with the usage of four or five years.
You can restrict the use of PPI by modifying your diet like reducing hot and spicy foods.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
