Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Doxepin HCL Cause Distorted Vision And Visual Hallucinations?
I am taking 7.5 MG Doxepin HCL to help me sleep and alleviate Restless Leg Syndrome. It has helped me decrease my dependency on other meds. I have an extreme case of RLS that is hereditary and extreme for 30 + years. I have tried every nerve, brain, muscle related medication ever offered over this time period. Doxepin and a very low dose of Oxycodone for the twitches is finally working. I have noticed after taking Doxepin (for 3 months) at bedtime and waking slightly after about 1 to 2 hours that I have a big opaque dark spot in front of my eyes, even in the dark. Sometimes it s in one eye but mostly in both. I can see on the periphery. The spot is gone when I wake in the morning. I ve also just started to have visual hallucinations (creeping black and white swirls) which indicated a visual migraine. That is usually a sign of side effects from medication in the past. I ve been a guinea pig for meds for RSL over the years and am concerned that this new visual spots effect may be signaling the need to stop the Doxepin. So far it is the only solution to my RSL sleep problem. Before I had to take up to 25MG of oxycodone to quiet my nerves and I do not want to go back to that drug. I looked up the side effects and only saw dizziness and lightheadedness noted. Visual distortions are not mentioned. Can you clarify or tell me where to look further?
