Does E Coli Infection Cause Memory Loss During Old Age?

Hello Dr. Narasi, A relative of my is currently in the Hospital and I being told her status is declining. From what I m being told she has fluid in the lungs and E coli skeptic. She is not talking other than asking not to be bothered. She also does not recognize family members. She is 76 years old. What does all this mean?Thank you.

Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic.

Her condition indicates that the infection with E coli has entered into her blood and through her blood it has started affecting her Brain . It's called Encephalitis .

Usually it's a treatable condition provided your doctor use strong Antibiotics. If not done I advise to do Blood culture sensitivity test, Ct scan of her Brain and also CSF analysis .
