Does Eliquis Cause Diverticulitis In An Eighty Year Old Woman?
Hi, My Mother is 80 yrs old, she was prescribed elequist 4 months ago, since that time has been hospitalized 3 times with diverticulitis not sure if I am spelling correctly but spell it like it sounds. She never had problems before and they give her antibiotics and keep her 3 days and send her home. she stays away from all the foods they said to but has to go back to the hospital about every 4 weeks. Her Dr. said that was normal with this and the elequist has nothing to do with it. ????
I understand your concern. First of all, diverticulitis at this age is a common problem. Diverticulosis is when pouches (diverticula) are formed in the wall of the colon and if they get inflamed and/or infected it is called diverticulitis. Eliquis is not related to diverticulitis and it is thought to be caused by lack of fiber in the diet, which makes the stool harder to go through the colon and get stuck, leading to formation of these pouches. Bacteria then grow into these pouches, leading to infection, and so the main treatment is pain medication and antibiotics. The diet is very important in order to ease symptoms and avoid relapse, so a mainly liquid diet initially and then solid foods rich in fiber is the best course.
Wishing her a swift recovery.
