Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Excedrin Cause Elevated Alkaline Phosphatase Levels?
My alkaline phos was elevated (180). I have been taking alot of excedrin for the past 10 yrs for headaches. Could this be the cause. I am also 65 so it might be bone density. Just curious. I will be seeing my primary care next week. All are routine test are within normal limits
Excedrin is an over-the-counter pain relief medication, typically used for the treatment of a headache. It contains Paracetamol (Acetaminophen), aspirin, and caffeine. Heartburn and upset stomach are the common side effects encountered with the intake of this medication. It is not known to affect biliary tract functions or bone mineralization, which can possibly elevate alkaline phosphatase enzyme level. The reference range for alkaline phosphatase is 44 to 147 IU/L.
Kindly get your bone mineral density checked along with taking an ultrasound scan of the abdomen to know what could be the cause for mild elevation of alkaline phosphatase.
You can consult Orthopedician or Physician accordingly with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
