Does IV Saline With Antibiotics Cause Weight Gain?
Hi Doctor, I have been in hospital for four days with a bacteria in my small intestine. I have been on an iv being fed antibiotics and saline. I haven t eaten anything solid in a week and yet I have put on weight and my usually flat stomach is not. Will this eventually pass? Or will I have to exercise it off?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted your history of being in the hospital for 4 days and have been kept on intra-venous (iv) antibiotics and fluids, have gained weigh and the size of the abdomen also has increased and wants to know the causes and whether it will pass or have to exercise it off. It looks from the history that you have been given an excessive of IV fluids and that is why it is possible that there is retaining of fluid in the body secondary to intestinal infection toxins working to cause this. This may eventually get ok after the toxemia is reduced. Exercises do not help in such a situation. Diuretics usually help to restore the imbalance.
