Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have recently been diagnosed with fibermyalgia and also have cervical disc disease (C6, C7). I have gone thru two radio frequency spinal procedures as well as two occipital nerve blocks for migraines. Do you think Lyrica will help with only the fibermyalgia? I am also currently taking oxycodone for cervical disc disease pain, diazepam for muscle spasms, and naproxen for inflammation. Colleen YYYY@YYYY
No, it will not cure BUT it IS a treatment for fibromyalgia by damping down nerves. Although it is a controlled substance, its risks are smaller than addiction from oxycodone and/or valium. There is some sedation from all of these (narcotic, valium, lyrica) that can interact together badly. Certainly it should only be used under supervision. Frankly, all the prevaling theories for fibromyalgia (its actually depression, it is due to opiate receptors not working, it is due to modulation of opiate receptors so that they are less effective and/or modulation of pain receptors so that they are MORE effective) say that opiates are the worst thing you can take for it (makes depression worse, makes opiate receptors LESS responsive due to tolerance, makes someoen expect NO pain and be entirely INTOLERANT to any feeling bad at all, etc.). Lyrica is not connected to opiates and is FDA approved for fibromyalgia.
