Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been told to stop my Meloxicam and the Dr. added the same day Atorvastatin. After 4 days i am on the couch in debilitating pain. I cant hardly cover myself in bed and dress myself. Are these symptoms of withdrawal to the meloxicam for the statin drugs?
Meloxicam does not cause withdrawal effects. If meloxicam had achieved substantial pain control and was stopped suddenly then the pain may recur and cause symptoms.
Since you've started Atorvastatin though, another - perhaps more likely cause - is a side effect.
Atorvastatin is well-known for causing diffuse body aches particularly when combined with other drugs like the fibrates or certain antibiotics and antifungals.
You can check your creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels to find out although in some cases the CPK levels may be normal even when atorvastatin is the cause. It would still be useful to know.
In such cases, I usually advise my patients to stop the statin and proceed to CPK testing. Be warned though that sometimes the pain caused by the statin may take many days to subside.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
