Does Pantoprazole Cause Stomach Cancer?

I was diagnosed with a hernia and acid reflux like 6 months ago. My doctor prescribed me pantoprazole but I would like to know more about the long-term use side effects.I read that there is a study that links its long-term use with stomach cancer and I am afraid that my doctor is not aware or he is not giving importance enough to that

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Long term use of Pantoprazole or other related antacids can lead to a condition known as achlorhydria where acid production in your stomach is greatly reduced and may lead to slightly higher chance for stomach cancer. However there is only mild risk and the benefits certainly outweighs the risk. Most of the gastroenterologist do not recommend use more than a year. You can use the drug on an "SOS" basis where you have to take the drugs only when you have symptoms. Also try some dietary modifications like avoiding spicy foods and quit smoking alcohol as they worsen the symptoms.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
