Does Piclin Syrup Prescribed For Constipation Has Side Effects?

my daughter is having severe constipation problem since last almost 3 years. she is 6 year old. we have consulted with local gastro doc and she prescriber piclin syrup to start with. now, she is able to pass stool with same syrup however, if we reduce to quantity or revise the frequency it loose the impact. in addition, i have heard that same syrup is having side effects as well.. please suggest.

Hello dear,

Though symptomatic relief from constipation can be obtained with intake of laxative preparations (like Piclin syrup), they are not advisable for long term use due to risk of dependency & irregular bowel movements.
So, the underlying cause needs to be treated.

The causes of constipation can be:
1. Any pathology/ sub acute obstruction in the Gastrointestinal tract.
2. Functional cause- due to decreased gastric motility.
3. Inadequate intake of fluids and fiber rich diet.
4. Hormonal & Metabolic causes, etc.

So, kindly consult a Gastroenterologist & get a proper clinical examination done.
Investigations like complete blood count, Ultrasound scan of abdomen & contrast studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for her symptoms.

There is no need to worry, she will be fine.
Till then, maintain adequate hydration & proper nutrition status.
