Does Port Wine Have All The Health Benefits As Traditional Red Wines?

My Dad's (Dad is 66) doctor told him that he should drink a glass red wine a day for his health, and to build his blood up. His blood doesn't clot and he seems to have low platelets. Dad has a few personal reservations about this idea, including the price of a glass of wine a day, I was thinking about having him drink port wine, he used to like it and the price is right. My main question is does port wine have all the same health benefits as traditional red wines? And if not what would be a good red wine for him? Thank you very much for your time, and I hope to hear from you very soon.

Red wine will not build his blood up. It does have a compound in it called resveratrol that helps protect cardiac status and is used in anti-aging supplements. I certainly don't think it would hurt him. The best wines seem to be Pinot noir, merlot and Zinfandel. I am confused about the doctor's recommendation because alcohol is a blood thinner so to recommend it to someone who can not clot makes no sense to me. I hope I have not added to the confusion.
