Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Prednisone For Ulcerative Colitis Cause Increase In Blood Sugar Levels?
I have steroid induced pre-diabetes. I take prednisone for my ulceratuve colitis and the medication causes my blood sugars to rise. I haven t eaten today, checked my blood sugar and it came up as 410. How bad is this? And once I m off the steroids will the pre-diabetes go away?
Hello, Welcome and thanks for your query. Prednisolone is well known to precipitate diabetes. At 410 mg of blood sugar, you are past pre diabetes and have diabetes. Hopefully it will revert. If not you would require medicines to control your blood sugar. It would be good for you to control your diet, exercise at least 30 minutes a day. If the blood sugar doesn't respond, you would require medicines. I shall be happy to answer any further queries you may have. Take care Dr Noble Zachariah
