Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am currently 43 and started taking sertraline 50 mg on April 7th to help with some anxiety. On May 10th, I started having some chest pain and diaherra. I went to the dr and they thought I was having some issues with heartburn. As of 6/4, I would have had diaherra for almost 4 wks. Stool samples were negative, but they put me on Metronidazol 500 mg 3 times a day for 7 days to see if things improve, they have not, although it is not explosive as it was. Still funky colors. My question is that how can I tell if it is a side effect of the Sertraline or something else. I like the sertraline, and only had a headache for a few days when I took it. I go back to the dr on Thursday, but just wanted to know your thoughts.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Sirisha's Response
In my view your symptoms may not be related to sertraline. we need to know the other medications you are taking apart from sertraline.chest pain and diarrhoea are the symptoms of anxiety itself or underlying pathology has to be ruled out for which investigations based on findings of physical examination are required. regarding heartburn you have to reduce spicy oily food and take bland (easily digestable) diet and fruits like musk melon, guava, water melon are helpful.regarding diarrhoea you can try eldoper 10mg sos along with metrogyl if you are not taking any other medication other than sertraline. When you are going to your dr you have to mention your headache to him as it is the side effect and should be informed to treating dr and if required dr will change the medicine.
