Does Spironolactone Have Any Side Effects Like Acne Outbreak?
I am currently taking Spironolactone 50.mg twice daily as a hormone blocker. When I get stressed I have acne out breaks, I was told that this drug blocks a certain hormone that s produced when highly stressed. What is your opinion? Patti Baker
Hi & Welcome. Yes, it can cause certain side effects. Incomplete data like age, gender, duration of treatment?
Spironolactone (an Aldosterone receptor antagonist) is a potassium sparing diuretic ("water pill") basically used in the treatment of edema (swelling) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure or liver disease) and high blood pressure.
Since it also blocks the effect of androgen hormones on the sebaceous glands hence it is used in low doses to treat hormonal acne in women and adolescent girls if antibiotics or other medications do not help.
In females its possible side effects include breast tenderness, irregular or painful periods, amenorrhea and the retention of potassium.
In males it can cause gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts), inability to achieve or maintain erection and the retention of potassium.
Hope these answer your query.
