Does Strattera Cause Huge Mood Swings And Suicidal Thoughts?
Hi, I am seeking information regarding my 13 year old daughter. Unable so far to seek proper mental heath care. Child was diagnosed early with ADHD. Was on stimulant for several years with not much improvement. Has always had problems with mood and emotion regulation. Recently was on Non stimulant Strattera and became depressed and suicidal about five weeks in. Had huge mood swings and crying episodes/irritability. Took off medication and only on Zoloft. Had another episode of crying/irritability. Can ADHD stimulants been covering up BI-Polar?
Strattera (atomoxetine) can cause suicidal ideation in children and adolescents. It can also cause depression as a side effect. That is the reason children who are put up on Straterra has to be closely followed especially in the initial weeks. According to my opinion, it looks more likely to be ADHD rather than bipolar. I would have advised my patient for a comprehensive management of ADHD that includes cognitive behavioural therapy along with medications. Hope this helps. Thanks.
