Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taken off all statins because of an abnormality in the enzyme levels in my liver. I have recently been prescribed Zetia another way to possibility to lower my colesterol. I am a post polio survivor and suffer from extreme arthritus. I would know exactly what Zetia does and does it have dangerous side effects, especially in regards to my liver. I guess what I want to know is, are the bad side effects worth the good it does?

Does Zetia Have Any Side Effects?
Hello welcome to HCM. I have read your question and understand your concerns. Tab zetia (ezetemibe) can cause liver injury and muscle injury on Longterm but on a lesser extent than statins. Zetia can cause significant liver injury when combined to statins. Alone it will rarely cause damage. So, my advice is to continue tab zetia and just do your liver profile every 2 monthly for 6 months. It rarely cause arthralgia, low pletlet count and muscle weakness also. Thank you. Have a nice day.
