Does A Bruised Nail Of An Injured Thumb Fall Off By Itself?

Hi, on August 3rd I smashed my thumb with the car door and it swelled up and it hurt for a good hours or so. It s been 2-3 days later and it s slowly turning purple from the nail. It s not completely dark, but a very light purple. Everyone is saying that my nail will fall off, is that true? It does not hurt as much as before, but only if you press on the nail. And also will I be able to apply fake nails with this injury? Thank you.

Hi,

You seem to have subungual hemorrhage due to injury. Do not worry. As time passes, the new nail will grow and the affected nail may be gradually pushed outside. It may not fall off. And do not try to remove it,as there may be severe pain if the nail bed is exposed. There is no need to take any treatment. Just wait.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilyas Patel,
