Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Two months ago, I had surgery for colon and rectal cancer (most of colon removed, rectum removed, anus sewn shut, hysterectomy, colostomy closed and replaced with an ileostomy). Was in the hospital for 33 days. Was home 2 weeks and ended up in Hospital for another week. Electrolytes were critically low due to high output from ostomy. Now get 12 hours infusion daily (TPN). My magnesium has been high. I have been getting a pain in my left side (thought I pulled a muscle doing my physical therapy). Today it seems to begetting a bit worse when I drink fluids. Can it have anything to do with my surgery?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Pain in the colostomy site may be due to infection or edema or obstruction of passage or electrolyte imbalance etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Check for serum electrolytes , check for nutritional deficiencies or check for infections. Please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
