Does Abnormal Menstrual Flow Indicate Pregnancy?

Hello Doctor, I started Femilon birth control pills last month as per my doctors advice. After having 21 tabs, i got my periods in 3 days but it was very light and it lasted only for 3 days instead of 5 days which is my normal period duration. I am afraid that I should not be pregnant because we had intercourse during those 7 days break just after finishing my pill pack and before getting the period. Can you please advice.

Hello and thank you for visiting our site.

While on the birth control pill, assuming that you did not miss any pills, the chance of pregnancy is extremely small. Also, the chance of pregnancy is much less at that point in your cycle. The pills lead to a lightening of your cycle, so what you are describing is more likely related to the effect of the pill and not pregnancy. A pregnancy test will turn positive about two weeks after conception. This should guide you in terms of timing of a test. Try not to worry too much and start the next pill pack as you have been instructed. Make sure that you followup with a pregnancy test though.

I hope that this helps and good luck!

Dr. Tim
