hello,
welcome to HCM
thanks for the query
if you have functional cyst then it ruptures when releasing the egg during ovulation.
If the cysts don’t rupture they may continue to grow, but they rarely grow larger than 7 to 8 cm.so if you are getting pain during ovulation then its a functional cyst.you can do usg near to period of ovulation.
if its a corpus luteal cyst then you will get pain during later days of menstrual cycle.so just before some days of menstruation you can do usg for luteal cyst.
if its other type of nonfunctional cysts like dermoid or chocolate cyst then you will get pain may be throughout the cycle. so according to symptoms your doctor can opt for ultrasound.
take care

Hi. Thanks for your query and for using Health Care Magic

Ovarian Cysts are are of two major types.
1. Physiological - these from in ovaries during normal menstrual cycle (called Dominant Follicle) and rupture soon after ovulation. Such cysts usually rupture/regress soon after ovulation i.e 14 days after last menstrual period for 20 days cycle.

2. Pathological (Benign and Malignant)- These are cysts which grow out of the surface epithelial cells and some gradually enlarge. The are not related to menstruation and therefore do not rupture or regress with mensturation.

Your nephew's ultrasound report will tell you clearly whether its a follicular cyst (which usually regresses) or otherwise.

Hope this answers your query.
